How can I be exempted from mandatory pension insurance?

Within the framework of the student assistant privilege, students enjoy special regulations in social security; however, this does not apply to the obligation to pay into the pension insurance. While students who engage in minor employment (so-called 'minijobs') can be exempted from the obligation to pay into the pension insurance, this is not possible for student assistant positions.
This means that student assistants, unlike those in minor employment, are generally subject to pension insurance obligations. Even though student assistants are exempt from health, long-term care, and unemployment insurance, they still have to contribute to pension insurance during their employment. Both the employer and the student assistant share the pension insurance contributions, similar to regular employees.

No exemption possibility for student assistants: While those in minor employment can apply for exemption from the obligation to pay into the pension insurance, this is not provided for student assistants. Student assistant positions are fundamentally subject to pension insurance obligations to secure pension entitlements for students in their later working life.
